After 34 days of avoiding getting sick and my tolerance and bravery to try more and more suspect street food ever increasing, on Day 35 right after the Acatenango Volcano climb I started to feel sick. Whilst Guatemala is an amazing place it is also a place where a lot of people get ill – the water and the food being the 2 main culprits. The next 5 days were very uneventful as I recovered from what I assume was food poisoning. 2 of the days were really bad and then a couple days of starting to feel myself again. I checked out of my hostel and into a hotel for a few nights as there was no way I was going to stay in a 15 bed, triple bunk dorm, all sharing 1 toilet, when I have food poisoning. I suspect it was possibly something I ate whilst staying overnight on Acatenango as I can’t imagine that food was stored particularly hygienically but I can’t be sure. I ended up having to move to 3 different hotels in 4 days as they only had availability for 1 night at a time which was super annoying. I shuffled my plans a bit and stayed an extra few days in Antigua whilst I got over the sickness.
Next stop – Lake Atitilan.
Poor Benno! And no one to give you any TLC! 😝😩
