Day 2 – Mexico City

Whoever told me that you don’t get hangovers when you’re travelling/on holiday has clearly not been to Mexico City.

Maybe a combination of jetlag, altitude and 400 beers during power hour, but this morning I was not in good shape. A very slow morning ensued. I slept in, the jetlag had me awake at weird hours again and was awake very early but then slept again from 8 until about 10ish. Today I was off on a boat tour (but it was more of a boat party) to Xochimilco which is about an hour or so outside of Mexico City. I admittedly hadn’t heard of this place before but it was super interesting. Xochimilco is famous for its canals, which are supposedly the last remnants of the water transport system built by the Aztecs. Colourful gondola like boats take tourists up the canals and it’s a very festive atmosphere with music, drinks and food.

I booked the tour again through my hostel and included in the ticket price was 3 beers each, guacamole and a bottle of tequila to share amongst the group. We stopped off on the way at a convenience store just incase that wasn’t enough alcohol for us. There wasn’t too much to see when on the canals, except for this creepy ‘Haunted Island of the Dolls’ (video attached). The origin of the dolls is that apparently the owner of the house once came across the body of a girl floating in the canals. Accompanying her body was a doll that he hung up on the tree to ward off evil spirits. Her spirit now haunts the canals, or that’s what the local guy on our boat told us.

There was 12 of us on the boat and all were solo travellers with a mix of nationalities; Irish, American, English, Colombian. I was the only Aussie. I haven’t actually met too many Aussies yet which has been surprising, just a set of twins from Melbourne on my first night.

The tour lasted 3 hours and by the end of it we were well on our way. The bus ride home wouldn’t be right if we didn’t stop off again to resupply and hydrate at the convenience store. We got back to the hostel and played games and drank some more at the rooftop bar. Culture!

The rest of the night is somewhat of a blur but we did visit this really nice hole-in-the-wall taco place at around 1am. This particular taqueria was apparently featured in the Netflix show ‘Taco Chronicles’. Thankfully the bloke I was with knew Spanish so we got to try all different flavours that I would have never been able to achieve on my own. I think the beef tongue was my favourite.
