After leaving Tulum I took a relatively painless 3 hour bus to Bacalar. I have already been to Bacalar with my tour but I am back as it is the most logical pit stop before going to Belize and where most backpackers go that are following the same general route.
My hostel is ironically nicer than the hotel I stayed at with my tour, right on the lagoon with a big pool. The hostel bar and restaurant works on a tab system, where they scan your wristband every time you purchase something and then you pay it all off at once at the end of your stay. This is very dangerous once you’ve had a few Denzel Frothingtons and forget how much you’re spending.
It was a nice relaxed 3 days in Bacalar, chilling by the pool and swimming in the lagoon.
There is a lunch/dinner spot called Mr Tacos that I went to about 4 times as it was the cheapest Tacos I’ve had since Mexico City… 20 pesos per taco. They knew my name there by the end of my time in Bacalar.
The highlight was the Wednesday ‘Yak Lakehouse Party’ which happens every Wednesday at the other big hostel close to ours. Seemingly every young person in Bacalar was there and it was a very good time… from the bits I remember :).
