Day 15 – Chichen Itza

Today we left Valladolid on route to Chichen Itza. Chichen Itza is one of the 7 wonders of the world and is my second of the 7 ticked off after a visit to the colosseum a few years ago.

My expectations of it going in were somewhat suppressed as I had read that the general consensus is that Chichen Itza is the least impressive of all 7 wonders. It was predictably very busy when we arrived and we were swamped with people trying to sell us all sorts. We had a guide talk us through the history of Chichen Itza and how and why it was built by the Mayan people. This made the experience a lot better and made me appreciate it more after hearing a bit of the background.

After a couple hours wandering around we got back on the bus and went for lunch. The lunch appeared to be at someones house that had been loosely converted into a makeshift restaurant for the day. It was a local family that put on the meal for us and it was one of the nicest meals I have had so far in Mexico.

After lunch we visited a cenote nearby which was so nice except for that lifejackets were mandatory to wear – maybe for the best for me.

We then embarked on Tulum which was about 2 hours away. We checked into our hotel and went straight out into the main town of Tulum. Out hotel was right next to the main strip which was convenient. We went to a cool bar where we stayed for most of the night until it closed at 2.

All in all a very good day!
