Day 1 – Mexico City

After 30 hours of travelling I finally checked into my hotel on Thursday night. I had mixed up when I would arrive, thinking it was Friday night so I had only booked accomodation from Friday. This realisation came to me an hour upon boarding to Mexico whilst sitting in the San Francisco airport. I quickly booked a hotel not far from the hostel I was to be staying at on Friday. This mess up turned out to be a blessing in disguise as the the thought of staying in a dorm room with 6 other people after 30 hours of travelling with minimal sleep was not a good one.

Checkout was at midday and I used up every minute of that time. The jetlag had me awake from around 4am – 8am and then right back asleep after that until 11. My hostel check in was at 3pm so I found a luggage holder place to store my bag for a few hours so I could explore the city until then. Of course this place was impossible to find, it was up the stairs at the back of an optometrist on the third floor of the building. I probably didn’t need their services with the length of the time I wasted trying to find the place.

I set out with no real plan but to walk around the city for the next couple of hours. I was not ready for the altitude which had me needing to slow down and take a breath every 10 minutes. The altitude or I’m unfit? I can already hear Tim saying its because I’m not fit.

Some Mexico City Day 1 observations:

Police are absolutely everywhere in the streets – standing outside shops, conducting traffic, walking around. You couldn’t walk 20 metres without seeing them.

Everyone wears jeans? Strange one but I didn’t see a single local wearing shorts even thought it was 28 degrees and the middle of the day.

 – Friendly people – Not that I spoke to too many people with my vocabulary consisting of only ‘Ola’ and ‘Gracias’ but people seemed friendly. I had a conversation over google translate with the luggage storage man that seemed to speak less English than I knew Spanish.

My hostel is super nice and I met loads of people up in the bar. They have a power hour from 6-7 which is unlimited beer and margaritas for 100 pesos ($8.97 AUD per google). I signed up for the Lucha Libre wrestling which was an event organised by the hostel which was on my list of must do things in Mexico City. The volunteer at the hostel talked us through the history of Lucha Libre and how it is the second most important thing in the country apparently – behind football. We had some beers and tequila and headed to the arena. I had imagined it sort of being a bit of a tourist trap type of activity full of foreigners but to my surprise there were many locals in attendance and it did feel like an authentic event. Finished around midnight and straight to bed.

Hopefully this google photos things works. Not many photos sorry Mum.
