San Juan Del Sur was the last leg of the Nicaraguan adventure. It is a coastal town located on the Pacific Coast. I would compare San Juan Del Sur to that similar of a Cancun or Tulum in Mexico; very Americanised and Western, tailor-made for tourists. It has great nightlife but had a less authentic and genuine feel than the rest of the country.
We poorly negotiated the fare for the taxi and made the quick hop over to San Juan Del Sur from Rivas after what proved to be another terrible ferry from Ometepe. Our hostel was perfectly located on the beach and we checked in and went to explore the town a little bit. We watched a great sunset and had a couple beveraginos on the beach. Having an early night was suggested by some people I was with, after a busy few days on Ometepe, but ultimately the 2-for-1 cocktail sign at a neighbouring beach bar proved too irresistible. As is often the case, a quiteish night was turned on its head once the mango daiquiris began to work its magic and we explored the depths of the San Juan Del Sur nightlife until the early morning.
We chilled the next day for a lot of the day, making the most of the hostel pool and seeking refuge from the heat. Not much excitement to report on that front.
The next day was the ‘Sunday Funday’ pubcrawl type party, a must do if you are following the Central America party route. It started at 11am and didn’t really have a finishing time. It was good fun and I knew a lot of people there that I had met over the course of the last few months.
San Juan Del Sur can be summarised by sunsets and the nightlife – two of the main and maybe only things to do here.
