Day 7-8 – Oxaca – San Cristobal

Today we had a bit of a sleep in as the morning was free to do what we like. Me and Peter had a nice breakfast at a place that had good reviews on google. I went with some sort of chorizo scrambled eggs that comes with black beans. Black beans seems to come with everything in Mexico. Whether it be a spread or whole beans you can bet there will be black beans on your meal – breakfast, lunch or dinner.

We had a walk around the city and through various markets. There is street art everywhere and it is really quite impressive. At 1pm as part of an included activity on my tour, we took a bus to a place about an hour away where they make tradtional Oaxan folk art. Its sort of like carved animals and figures which they then paint. I was quite interested in a couple of them until I read the prices… in which I slowly and even more carefully than I picked them up, put it down and walked away. We then had an opportunity to paint ourselves which was fun. Mine was horrendous.

The evening was free for us to chill. We went to a restaurant recommended by Bec which was super nice and then checked out a food stall next door which featured on the Netflix show ‘Street Food – Latin America’. I went home and packed my stuff as we were heading on a night bus to San Cristobal.

I’m convinced the bus driver drove to San Cristobal on a route that resembled a spiral as I was awoken every few minutes by tight curves and bumps in the road. At around 3am the bus company thought it was a good idea to turn on the lights and check everyones tickets, even though they had checked our tickets upon boarding and we had not made any stops??? Cheers.

We arrived at a nearby town to San Cristobal and took a private shuttle to Sumidero Canyon. This is a national park in the Chiapas state region. It was a fairly interesting tour and we got to see crocodiles and monkeys.

Upon arriving our tour guide took us on a walking tour of San Cristobal. I hadn’t heard of this place before booking the tour but it has probably been my favourite place so far in Mexico. Possibly only because we are here on a Friday / Saturday, but everywhere seems lively and busy with lots going on. We had a nice dinner and then walked up a flight of stairs to the church for what is supposed to be the best sunset spot in town.
